Falling Training for Seniors

Falling Training for Seniors is a comprehensive, hands-on program designed for the general public, skilled nursing facilities, and age-restricted communities. The program teaches practical techniques and body-awareness strategies intended to reduce the risk of injury when a fall cannot be avoided. Rather than focusing only on preventing falls, the training addresses what happens when a person loses balance and is going down, providing participants with opportunities to learn and practice safer responses.

Falling Training for Seniors uses a structured 12-session format. Every session moves through the complete training routine, allowing participants to repeatedly practice each component of the program. Repetition is an important part of the training because falling is often unexpected, and practical responses need to become familiar through hands-on practice.

The routine begins with Understanding Falls & Safe Landing, establishing the principles behind safer responses when a fall occurs. Participants then work through techniques for Protecting the Head & Neck and Using the Hands and Arms, followed by practice involving different directions of falling. Side Falls & Side Landings, Backward Falls & Back Landings, and Forward Falls & Forward Landings address the different ways a person may go to the floor.

Falling Training for Seniors also introduces Rolling to Distribute Impact, providing participants with an opportunity to practice how controlled rolling can change the way impact is distributed. The program then addresses Getting Down Safely and Getting Up After a Fall, covering both sides of the experience: responding during the descent and managing the transition from the floor afterward.

As the program progresses, participants repeatedly work through the complete routine while developing greater familiarity with the techniques. Recovering From an Unexpected Fall brings the individual skills together in practical situations, followed by Putting the Techniques Together, where participants practice moving through the techniques as an integrated sequence.

The final session, Practicing Safer Falls & Landings, provides another complete opportunity to work through the program and reinforce the techniques introduced throughout the sessions. Because every class includes the entire routine, participants are not required to wait for a particular session to practice a particular skill. Each class provides another opportunity to revisit the complete sequence and develop greater familiarity with the material.

Falling Training for Seniors is designed for practical instruction and hands-on learning. Participants are introduced to techniques progressively and then revisit them throughout the program. The repeated structure provides continuity while allowing participants to develop greater understanding of how different techniques relate to different types of falls.

The program can be delivered in a variety of community and care environments. It is appropriate for the general public as well as organizations serving older adults, including skilled nursing facilities and age-restricted communities. The 12-session structure can also be adapted to a shorter 6-session format when appropriate, while retaining the core components of the training.

Falling Training for Seniors emphasizes preparation for an unexpected event. Participants learn that a fall does not necessarily have to mean an uncontrolled impact with the floor. Through instruction and repeated hands-on practice, the program introduces strategies for protecting vulnerable areas, controlling body position, distributing impact, and managing movement during and after a fall.

The goal of Falling Training for Seniors is to provide participants with practical knowledge and repeated practice of safer falling and landing techniques. By moving through the entire routine during every session, participants have consistent opportunities to reinforce the skills and understand how the individual techniques fit together.
